01
Start with a documented requirement
Write down the customer or operational problem, who owns it and how success will be measured. Search for an app only after checking whether Shopify, the theme or an existing tool already handles the requirement.
02
Evaluate the full impact
Review permissions, data handling, support quality, pricing at expected scale, theme compatibility and uninstall behaviour. An app can affect storefront scripts, checkout, customer communication and team workflows, so involve the relevant owners.
03
Prefer fewer, better-integrated tools
Overlapping apps create duplicated data, inconsistent experiences and subscription waste. Choose a clear system of record for reviews, loyalty, subscriptions, email and support, then confirm how data moves between them.
04
Test performance and experience
Measure important templates before and after installation. Test mobile behaviour, accessibility, localisation and edge cases such as discounts or customer accounts. Remove leftover code when an app is uninstalled.
05
Review the stack regularly
Quarterly reviews can identify unused subscriptions, redundant features and broken integrations. Recheck critical apps before major theme or checkout changes. The best app stack is intentionally maintained, not endlessly accumulated.
