01
Measure before changing anything
Test representative pages on mobile and desktop, including the homepage, content, forms and ecommerce templates. Use field data when available and note server response, largest content, layout movement and interaction delays.
02
Fix the delivery foundation
Choose hosting appropriate for traffic and site complexity, keep PHP and WordPress supported, use page caching and serve static assets through efficient delivery. Confirm backups before major platform or plugin changes.
03
Optimise images and fonts
Resize images to their displayed dimensions, use modern formats where supported and lazy-load media below the first screen. Limit font families and weights, preload only critical files and avoid loading icon libraries that are mostly unused.
04
Control themes, plugins and scripts
Remove abandoned plugins and replace overlapping tools. Audit third-party chat, analytics and advertising scripts because they can dominate interaction time. A lightweight theme helps, but template quality and content choices still matter.
05
Maintain performance
Set a performance budget and retest after design, campaign or plugin changes. Monitor uptime, errors and key templates. Speed is an operating practice, not a one-time optimisation task.
